Roofing systems are complex constructions. Understandably, it can be nerve-wracking if you don’t know the specifics of roof replacement and repairs. In today’s post, the roofing contractors at A Crown Roofing Inc. answers some of the most pressing roofing questions asked by homeowners.

My roof is leaking. Do I have to have it replaced?
There is no single answer to this because the leak may be caused by one or more factors. A leaking roof may be the result of years of accumulated wear, or it could be caused by something more recent, perhaps impact from a tree branch that created a hole on the roof. To determine the cause — and whether or not you need to have your roof repaired or replaced — have your roof inspected by your trusted roofing contractor.
After inspection, your roofing contractor will provide a detailed report of their findings and help you create a repair and maintenance plan. The objective is for you to get the most out of your roof. A trustworthy roofing contractor wouldn’t recommend replacement unless the roof is too damaged that it’s beyond repair.
Can I replace my asphalt shingle roof with metal or tile?
Today’s sloped roofs are so similar in structure that it is possible to switch from one type of material to another when you’re replacing your roof. Of course, this can be done under certain conditions. For example the existing roof deck has to be structurally sound and undamaged, and only been used once. Roofing materials have different minimum slope requirements, so an existing roof framing may only be suitable for certain types of roofing material.
I heard you can save money on roof replacement by installing it right over the old one. Is this true?
“Reroofing” is a process that involves installing a new roof, from underlayment to shingles, over the old one. It is possible to save money on labor costs because you’d be foregoing the removal and disposal of the old roof.
The real question is whether or not the savings outweigh the disadvantages. Since the old roof will not be removed, the problem that led to roof removal in the first place won’t be addressed, merely covered. There will also be limitations on the warranty coverage and roofing products that can be installed. Ultimately, when it comes to roofing, it’s best to play it safe and have the roof completely replaced.
